HeartMatters and Man on the Go

I’ve been following Chris Brogan for about a year; Chris, through his company New Marketing Labs, works with large and mid-sized companies to improve online business communications like marketing and PR through the use of social software, community platforms, and other emerging web and mobile technologies. A colleague recommended that I follow Chris to glean strategies that would support my growing business. I have in fact integrated quite a lot of the valuable and relevant information imparted in his blog and video posts, have been directed to other savvy professionals that he has mentioned in his posts, and have perused some of the books he suggests. Chris’s message of building community by offering yourself and your particular area of expertise to others, willingly and genuinely, resonates with me. So I jumped at the chance to build my community alongside Chris, when I read about the introduction of his latest venture, Man on the Go–a travel advice and information website for the traveling professional (although the information applies to anyone that travels…).

I contacted Chris, created my first ever video, calling it Healthy Travel Tips for the Man on the Go, and loaded it to YouTube. He posted it yesterday on the Man on the Go website, and hey, I’m off and running. I’m excited that we’ll be collaborating to share an important message. Via the manonthego.com website, I will be sharing weekly healthy travel tips about eating well, staying physically active, and eliciting the relaxation response–all in the context of business travel–so that taking good care of your physical and emotional health is simply a routine aspect of every day.

When the busy professional optimizes his or her personal health and well-being, there is a noticeable enhancement of business success. Taking care of YOU on a personal level leads to professional accomplishment and prosperity.

Now that’s a undeniable ROI.

A (very) Humid Run

Whew! Running in 85 degree weather in Fort Lauderdale feels a whole lot different than the 85 degree summer runs I enjoy where I live, in the Sierra Nevada foothills. Don’t get me wrong, I like the sweat that comes with the incredibly high humidity–somehow it makes me feel as if I am exercising harder.

Near the hotel at which I am staying is a neighborhood park, with a mile-long paved loop around a man-made “lake”, complete with a par course, soccer fields, and huge swimming pool. I was able to stay on the grass along the path for most of the run–a good thing as I am used to running the dirt trails at home, but I did zig-zag off the grass to make way for several duck families. Sweet, baby ducks are just too cute! I didn’t want to get too close to them.

I saw some of the usual Florida birds; ibis, egrets, and herons but the HUGE score was the burrowing owl that was just hanging out on a fence post. How cool is that?

Another Opportunity to Relax

I write and speak often about the benefits of taking time to relax–to quiet the mind, mitigate the effects of stress hormones in the body, and to create brain changes that support personal, emotional, and professional well-being. Another opportunity to relax came to me recently in a different format, but one that I am willingly going to cultivate as a practice.

Relax: in front of the video camera, an audience, my Toastmasters colleagues…I’ve blogged previously that I have been held up by my expectation of perfection, for performing well, for success–heck, I gave a winning speech at Toastmasters about this very topic–and I am slowly giving myself permission to accept my best without being self-critical, to understand the value and insight I bring to others need not be delivered in a “perfect” manner, and simply to relax.

As I continue to pursue this way of being present, another opportunity to relax has recently come up for me. I’ve submitted a video to Man on the Go, Chris Brogan’s newest online venture–a travel blog for busy professionals–with my subject matter titled Healthy Travel Tip of the Day. I see endless possibilities for subject matter and intend to submit a video for each and every idea I can think of that relates to physical and emotional health and well-being for the successful professional. Here’s where the opportunity arose: being relaxed in front of the Flip video camera! Allowing myself the human element of spontaneity, to go with the flow but provide useful and practical information that is presented with my own unique and personable style.

This epiphany is a gift. A liberation from my self imposed expectations. An Opportunity to Relax.

Wild and Scenic River

The Yuba River. Wild. Scenic. Majestic. Powerful. Spirited.

Living in the Sierra Foothills offers consistent reminders of life’s blessings. I am surrounded by exquisite, simple, natural beauty: trees, flowers, birds, cool sweet air in the morning, dazzling stars at night, and the Yuba River…the jewel of the Sierras. Yesterday morning found me at Hoyt’s Crossing, on my well established summer river schedule–my car is parked by 9, I’m at the beach by 9:30, I luxuriate in relative solitude until 11:30-ish, and I am hiking back to my car before noon, just as the crowd begins to amass. Grace is by my side, thrilled to be on the trail, and she knows exactly what side trail to take to our beach.

The roar of the river was impressive as I hiked to Hoyt’s. Glimpses of the water through the trees brought views of high, fast flow. Our beach was not covered by water as several along the trail had been, but there was much less beach available. I’ve chosen this beach over and over again for its fabulous deep, calm swimming hole and the perfectly shaped rocks at the upper end of the hole are inviting to scramble up onto for warming up in the sun.

Not yesterday. The rocks were not only completely underwater, but had created a sort of break point for the flow so that the river crashed into the rocks then split in two as it aggressively flowed downstream. The current was so strong up to the shoreline, that I knew immediately that tossing Grace’s ball into the flow would carry it away and into the next set of rapids at the bottom of the hole. She sensed too, the intensity of the river flow, choosing to stay at the water’s edge instead of jumping right in to swim with delight.

So we ended up hanging out on the beach, barely dipping in our toes, watching the trees and bushes sway in the wind, and simply enjoying the gorgeous river without getting wet. A divine morning.

Next time, we’ll swim.

"After thirty years of eating healthy foods and participating in regular, vigorous exercise, I was astounded to discover I have Coronary Artery Disease. In March of 2010, I had two stents placed in my Left Anterior Descending Artery- this was big. I consulted Robin Mallery, RN, knowing she is a local expert on Cardiac Rehabilitation. I especially respected her lifestyle of nutrition and physical fitness. Robin’s reassurance that I was doing many things correctly, and her instructions on how to fine-tune my program to deal with this life-threatening disease, was invaluable. Robin’s exquisite grasp of balancing traditional medicine with diet, exercise, relaxation and fun has helped me through this medical crisis". --Maiya Gralia, Licensed Clinical Social Worker and cross-country ski instructor and coach
